For a trip into old world dental care, take 1-55 to Harlem Avenue where you will find yourself in the heart of the Polish community; heading left on Archer Avenue, go slowly so as not to miss an unobtrusive storefront, the high-tech clinic of Dr Slaski.

From the moment you step through the door, you will be treated like a very welcome guest. Karen the receptionist and Kris's dental assistant, will greet you as a friend, with her perky, bright and electric smiles. As you fill in a first-time patient data chart, listen to the sounds emanating from behind closed doors; do not be alarmed by the strange guttural noises wafting from the dental chair.

As I explained to a new patient whose concern was pasted right across her face, these are not expressions of pain but rather of suppressed laughter. Dr Slaski's patients you see, are not only subjected to the usual dental treatments, but also get a healthy dose of humor, in addition to fillings, root canals, bridges and cosmetic interventions.

While you are still filling in the blanks on the data chart, don't be surprised to see another friendly face looking down at you. Donata. Dr S's wife and office manager, likes nothing better than to chat with patients, especially if they speak Polish or Tangalese -- that is, the language all Argentine Tango dancers speak. Donata looks seriously professional, her calm and re-assuring presence makes you forget any fears that might have surfaced while you traveled from home; but there is a wild and passionate side to her which surfaces on the dance floor. To catch a glimpse of this, only say "Tango!" to see what happens -- or else watch her respond to the Tango music playing in the adjacent room. Dr Slaski also prefers to sedate his patients with a dose of Argentinean music, but his gentle dentistry does permit anesthesia when needed.
